Are you a good listener? Are you able to help your clients to find solutions they otherwise battle to see? Or are you arriving with predefined answers that may not always be suitable for the situation your clients find themselves in?
The quality of the support we can offer our business clients is directly related to our ability to hear them and to support them in deeper thinking about the challenges they face; and not necessarily the clever solutions we may have identified from somewhere else.
So says Louis van Rhyn, CEO of Symphonia Leadership Development and Founder of Partners for Possibility, who will be the guest at the upcoming episode of the IBASA & EPI Webinar Series.
In quoting Nancy Kline, author of More Time To Think, Van Rhyn says the quality of everything we do depends on the quality of our thinking; and therefore the quality of our relationships with others depends on the quality of our thinking when we are with them.
“When you show up as the expert, it often is disempowering for those you work with, as you are not responding to their perspectives and priorities, but rather your own solutions,” says Van Rhyn. “A more productive approach is to listen with compassion and co-create solutions, which your client owns.”
This is why compassionate listening and quality thinking is a good way to create a lasting impact with the people you support, she says.
You may ask yourself how you show up when you support others. Are you bombarding your client with pre-set solutions and then the problems persist; or are you able to listen, understand and support your client to create options that they own and can implement?
“It is not that difficult to become a thinking partner for your clients and thus create a better and lasting impact,” says Van Rhyn.
