VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT: MANAGING DIRECTOR - Closing date 21 April 2020

The Institute of Business Advisors Southern Africa (IBASA) is a Non-Profit Company formed in 2001. It is a professional self-regulatory body that prides itself on the calibre of members in its membership base who subscribe to its code of ethics and the high standards of professionalism. We are recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as the professional body for Business Advisors. The Institute is responsible for the grading, accreditation, and continuous professional development of business advisors, business coaches, and mentors serving the micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMME’s) in South and the Southern Africa sub-continent/ region.

IBASA wishes to appoint a Managing Director (MD) on a fixed 3 (three) years fixed term contract. The appointment will be subject to the signing of an employment contract and performance agreement, as well as the disclosure of financial interests. The appointed official will be reporting directly to the Board of Directors (BoDs) of the Institute of Business Advisors of Southern Africa (IBASA).

Primary Functions:

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:

  • Play an active role in the determination and implementation of the Institute’s strategy, in collaboration with the Board and Exco.
  • Develop a sustainability strategy for IBASA that focuses on both financial and technical sustainability.
  • Develop a high-quality business plan ensuring its alignment with short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Lead and motivate the team of employees to advance employee engagement and develop a high performing managerial team.
  • Oversee all operations and business activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission.
  • Make high-quality investment decisions to advance the business and increase surpluses.
  • Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the Institute’s legality and business ethics.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of appropriate policies, procedures and work practices aligned to the values and corporate governance principles.
  • Review financial and non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements.
  • Build trust relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for core stakeholders.
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of the markets and industry of the Institute.
  • Collate and report business progress to the board.
  • Inform the Board, Exco and its committees about trends, issues, problems and activities to facilitate policy-making.
  • Identify problems and opportunities and address them; bring those which are appropriate to the Board, Exco and/or its committees and facilitate discussion and deliberation.
  • Ensure effective general administrative responsibility relating to position, e.g. scheduling of meetings, correspondence, data/document management, etc.

  • Display and demonstrate effective leadership in the Institute.

Appointment requirements:

  • Prospective candidates must hold Bachelor’s Degree in Business Sciences, Economics and/or Management.
  • Post-graduate degree will be advantageous.
  • Registration with IBASA or similar organisation will be advantageous.
  • Ten years’ practical experience in a similar environment, of which at least five years must be at senior management level.
  • Good knowledge and interpretation of policy and translation of legislation into risk instruments.
  • Good knowledge of performance management.
  • Understanding of good governance.
  • Good knowledge of supply chain management regulations and the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, 2000 (Act 5 of 2000).
  • Ability to make high-risk decisions of a long-term and strategic nature.
  • No criminal record (excluding previous conviction(s) related to political activities under the previous dispensation).
  • A valid Code B driver’s licence.
